a power plug January 20, 2007

Wow, this may be the first time I did a challenge on time. But here it is, a power plug.

I just wonder why I had to choose one with a shiny surface, with all the reflections, and with a transparent plug in it.  Well, it is supposes to be a challenge, and it really was.

sky above Amsterdam January 18, 2007

This is a quick drawing of the sky above Amsterdam yesterday morning. It looked weird, with diagonal shapes of clouds and one opening whith a bit of sunshine. You coloud see three “sunbeams” coming through the opening.

I saw this view from the twelfth floor of our university. I was sitting next to the window. Below you could just see the line of buildings and trees in the distance, but no individual builidngs.

What a difference with today, we have had only rain and storm for more than a week. I still hope to get my landscape challenge done, but I wait till the rain has stopped. Now I have at least the cloud challenge done.

my first self-made book January 14, 2007

A few days ago I found some instructions for making your own book here. I decided to try it, just for fun. And why not show the results here?

I used different kinds and colours of paper for the inside. It is about 11 by 16 cm.

I don’t think it that bad for a fist, and I loved doing it. The instructions are pretty simple, and I am sure I will be making more books in the future.

some fruit

Today I decided to draw something representing one of my other, non drawing-related, new year goals. And that is: eat more healthy things. This is a drawing of some fruit, I hope you can tell which kinds, because I don’t know the English name for the middle one.

After some thinking I decided to focus on this medium, coloured pencil, for some time. Both these “normal” ones and the pastel pencils I have. I decided this partly because I like drawing more than painting and partly because I had these and like them. I need a lot more practice, and I will try to learn more from a book I am ordering soon. The thing I have most problems with is making a colour I don’t have out of two or three others. Any suggestions would be welcome.

trying out my pencils January 6, 2007

Filed under: Drawings — paulien @ 5:18 pm

Today I finally tried out my new pastel pencils. It is a set of 30 pencils by Van Gogh, in a nice plastic box. It was a bit weird, they differ a lot from coloured pencils. But how much fun they are!
penguin
I did this drawing of a penguin today, made from a photo. I like the penguin itself, but the ground is much more difficult. He is walking on snow, and I didn’t get that right. I saw all kind of greys and blues, not only white.

a glass of water January 4, 2007

Filed under: Drawings — paulien @ 9:36 am

I just started my new sketchbook yesterday. In my last book I only used pen, but in this drawing I used pencil. I seem to like pencil much more. When I was only allowing myself to draw in pen, I had every excuse not to do it, but I love drawing in pencil and I don’t  try to make excuses any more. Well, it has only been three days so far so I will have to see if this effect lasts.

glas

This is a drawing of a glass of water. It was really hard to draw this. I saw all those reflections of the small lightbulbs we have in our lamp above the table, and the edges of the glass. And to make it worse, the water seems to distort everything so all edges seem “broken”. Next time, I will take a round glass and draw in daylight.

art plan of sorts December 31, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — paulien @ 6:18 pm

I got inspired by some people on the EDM-list to make a little plan for the new year 2007. The year is almost here, less than seven hours to go, so it is about time to post it here.

My first and most important goal will be to draw something every day. I hope to provide enough practice for myself in this way, and to improve my skills. I will take a small sketchbook with me all day long, and try to really use it.

For the first month this will be enough. After that, I may decide on a theme or medium for a month. Some ideas are trying watercolours, drawing outside or drawing portraits. I have not decided on it yet.

I also want to take a drawing and/or painting class. I have done one this year, and it was really nice. I just have to see if I can manage it financially, but I am going to try. (hint for birthday present?)

And last, I want to work through some books on drawing. I am about halfway through Drawing on the right side of the brain, and I have discovered I like doing exercise-like things, they keep me going. And I learn something of course. Suggestions for books are very welcome.

Last but not least, a non-drawing related goal. I want to finish my second master thesis (first is done!) , and find a job.

Well, that should do it for this year. Better get working! Have a nice evening today.
